Beef Curry Mamak Style

Hi uolls,

Sharing with you today my family’s new favourite curry. Introduced by a family friend, tried and tasted and wow!!! It taste so so good and my family “approved” to be added in our “FAVOURITE MENU LIST” and so, I’m sharing this easy recipe. Give it a try, you will love it too!

I made this to serve with roti prata (an Indian flatbread also known as roti canai) and carry forward some for lunch. Mamak style beef curry (you can also try it with chicken) is a bit vibrant as compared to the ‘Malay Beef/or Chicken Curry’. It’s best serve with rice, bread or roti prata.

Recipe : Beef Curry Mamak Style

Ingredients :

  • 1 pcs pandan leave – cut into 1 inch
  • 3 stalks curry leaves
  • 1 cinnamon stick, 2 star anise, 4 cloves & 4 cardamom pods
  • 1 kg beef (chuck)– cubed cut
  • 200 ml water
  • 3 cubes chicken stocks /or 2 tsp pink salt (you can go ahead with normal salt, it’s fine)
  • 2 carrots – cut into 1 inch chunks
  • 3 potatoes – cut into large, even-shaped chunks
  • 3 tbsp chilli powder (we love it extra spicy)
  • 4 tbsp curry powder (meat)
  • 2 tbsp coriander powder
  • 2 tbsp fennel power
  • 2 tbsp turmeric powder
  • 400 ml coconut milk (or you can use fresh milk)
  • 2 bulb onions (sliced)
  • 1.5 inch ginger (chopped)
  • 10 cloves garlics (chopped)
  • 2-3 stalks curry leaves and 10-15 dried chillies (cut into halves) – optional

In a large pot or pan, heat up the oil over medium heat and add the cinnamon, star anise, cloves, cardamom pods, curry leaves and pandan leaves for fragrant for about 1 min.

Add in the onions, chopped garlic and ginger and fry for 2-3 mins before adding the curry, fennel, coriander, chilli and turmeric powder. And fry till the mixture is a little dry. Stir for a little bit before adding water and chicken stocks (or salt – according to your preference).

Let it simmer and add in the beef, let it boil at a low heat for about 1-1.5 hours (i prefer to cook the beef longer, for tenderness).

Once your beef is tender, add in the carrots, potatoes and coconut milk. Let it boil for another 15 mins before putting in the curry leaves and dried chillies (optional).

Serve it hot, top with hot rice or bread with this super shiok beef curry! This recipe is so easy, even my husband can cook this like a pro. (Will share his video the next round).

Happy trying, uolls!
